The first step to making cantaloupe ice cream is getting the perfect melon, of course.

Choosing a ripe cantaloupe:
This guide from California Grown will give you the step-by-step instructions for choosing a melon, plus the nutrition details too. But here's the short version: choose a cantaloupe with slightly softer blossom end (not where the stem was cut) and creamy colored rind, not green.
Didi you California is the biggest melon producer in the U.S.? It's true.
Now, the rest of the cantaloupe ice cream ingredients:
You'll need sugar, water and heavy cream along with the melon. If you want a dairy free cantaloupe ice cream, use canned coconut milk or dairy-free plain or vanilla milk.

Giving your ice cream a flavorful kick:
Once you've got the basic cantaloupe ice cream under control, you can start incorporating additional flavors. Vanilla bean + cantaloupe is fabulous, or try something a little wilder like my friend Meg's Lemongrass Melon Ice Cream recipe. Even adding some simple orange or lime zest to your ice cream base will add a new dimension.
Think melon ice cream sounds weird?
It's actually delicious. Think about how great cantaloupe + vanilla ice cream are together, then there you go. Ben & Jerry's even have a recipe which the oh denny blog shares, although it never made store shelves.
