There is just something about a warm, soft pretzel that reminds me of my youth.  Watching the Cubs play at Wrigley Field, enjoying the circus, or attending an amusement park just seemed better when you munched on a pretzel.  Thanks to the good folks at Kim and Scott's Gourmet Pretzels now there is a frozen gluten-free pretzel to fill the void.

Their gluten-free pretzel was two years in the making and is made from a blend of gluten-free ancient grains including sorghum flour, millet flour, quinoa flour, amaranth flour and teff flour that offer more fiber.  Each pretzel is made from scratch and twisted by hand and provides 5 grams of whole grains.  They are made in a nut-free bakery using good manufacturing standards.  Imagine eating a gluten-free pretzel that was made to be healthful.

“Some gluten-free products rely solely on rice flour as their alternative grain,” said Scott Holstein, COO and founder of Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels. “’Ancient grains’ allow us to bake a more nutritious food, something gluten-free dieters often need and want.”

The pretzels are smaller than the wheat-based pretzels they make and are more expensive, but we found the cost of $7.49 a box (two in a box) to be worth the expense.  The pretzels are fully baked and just need to be warmed.  There are instructions for microwaving and baking them from a thawed or frozen state. Microwave equals softer and oven equals crunchier.

We chose to heat them in the toaster oven because we wanted a crunchier pretzel. They were done after less than 10 minutes in the toaster oven, then we topped them with sea salt and it was time to eat.  I am not a fan of mustard on pretzels and can no longer enjoy warm cheese sauce, so they were eaten plain.

The pretzel was just wonderful although they are heavier than a traditional pretzel.  The pretzel has more of a biscuit texture and is moist, soft, and easy to bite into.  There is no weird aftertaste and they don't crumble although they aren't quite as 'sour' as we remember.  Given the biscuit-like texture they could be topped with jelly/jam, apple butter, honey butter, or cinnamon sugar for a wonderful treat.

We really enjoyed Kim & Scott's 'twist' on a traditional gluten-free pretzel and will definitely be purchasing them again. Right now the only local place we have seen them for sale is at Whole Foods in the freezer section.  They should pop up at other local health food stores soon.  The pretzels can also be purchased directly from the company on their website by the case.
