Bloody Caesar cocktails are one of my favorite brunch + summer sips. The refreshing brininess and flourish of garnishes takes the basicย Bloody Mary up a notch.
Canadaโs โnational cocktailโ is the Bloody Caesar,ย invented by bartender Walter Chell in Calgary, Alberta in 1969. The Caesar originally contained mashed clams, ย but the introduction of Clamatoย made it substantially easier to prepare. Clamato* contains MSG, which makes me feel a little wonky, so I use 1 part tomato juice + 1 partย clam juiceย with a splash of lemon juice, and then I use a little extra hot sauce if Iโm feeling spicy. I usually am.
Adjust the hot sauce to suit your palate, and feel free to play with the garnishes; the lime wedge and celery are traditional, but the skyโs the limit: I took my inspiration from the Caesarโs briny flavors and doubled down on the seafood.
Youโll want to make sure your hot sauce andย Worcestershire sauceย are gluten-free, of course.
Serve up these Bloody Caesars with savory appetizers like Dynamite Salmon or Pimento Cheese. They are also perfect at brunch alongside Tomato & Green Onion Quiche and a platter of Oven-Baked Bacon.
*Clamato is also a key ingredient in one of Mexicoโs most popular cocktails, the Michelada. Make one by combining a gluten-free beer, Clamato and a squeeze of lime in a salt-rimmed glass.
